Reception
To commemorate World AIDS Day 2008, the Global Health Council, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Ministry of Health of Brazil hosted a series of events to examine the use of communication as a tool for HIV prevention.
The centerpiece of the commemoration was the display of selected artworks from "Drawing It Out," the 1st International HIV/AIDS Cartoon Exhibition, an initiative of the Ministry of Health and of Memorial Institute of Graphic Arts. The competition selected 300 cartoons from 1,200 artworks from 50 countries, of which 60 were in this exhibit.
In addition, World AIDS Day marked the beginning of the mobilization campaign for the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, the world's oldest and largest HIV awareness event led by civil society. The 2009 theme and the co-hosts of the Opening Ceremony in May were be announced during the reception.

As part of the commemoration, the organizers held a round table discussion titled "The state of the epidemic in Latin American and the Caribbean." This activity, which took place at PAHO Headquarters, examined the impact, response and need to scale-up prevention, including through the use of art, humor and other communication tools.
